D#5, HW#5 Field Research
Network administrators for large elementary school districts could offer opinions and examples that would be useful for my research. I could interview them, asking about their personal experiences with filtering software. It would be interesting to know how frequently (or infrequently) the filters interfere with student research, as well as the number of times the filters prevented students from accessing inappropriate materials. If I could observe student access without them knowing that I was watching, I might also develop a better understanding of the frustration caused by filtering. Our students complain once in awhile, but not every time they are blocked. I would like to better understand the situation in some larger school districts.

Where do you work? I think another good source of opinions would be parents of school aged children. It looks like your doing very well with this project though. :-D
I work in the Media Center at a K-12 Charter School. I don't get as many chances to talk to parents as I did in the classroom, but you are right...their opinions would be very useful for my topic.
My roommate use to be a network admin for school districts, so if you are interested in a quick little interview I can give you his email address. It might be helpful for some of your research.
I can tell you from personal experience coming out of a 5A district 1 school that at my high school many topics teachers would simply not allow students to pick due to filtering such as any violence or dangerous.
Thanks for the offer, Jared. I was planning to talk to our network admin guy, and if I need more info I will take you up on it.
